CURRICULUM

The California State Frameworks and the Diocese of Oakland guidelines

are followed in all curriculum and textbook decisions at Saint Patrick School.

Students will learn fundamentals of movement and the skills needed to move in a variety of different ways. They will have the opportunity to be creative and learn to master basic skills and later combining skills that are needed for most of the major and individual sports.

Manipulatives will be used to improve eye/hand and eye/foot coordination through a variety of games that emphasize teamwork and cooperation. Gymnastics, tumbling, rhythm, dance, aerobics and fitness are very much part of the program. Students will learn how to determine an emergency, basic first aid,  CPR,

and learn how germs are spread. They will receive AIDS awareness and preventive tactics according to Diocesan guidelines and grade appropriateness.

As children grow and develop, we will discuss individual differences in themselves and others and how to accept them. We will discuss personal changes and how to overcome obstacles they may have. Social skills are taught throughout the year. Nutrition and its effects on overall health and fitness will be discussed. Other safety and health related subjects will be taught throughout the year.

Grade 5 through 8 will learn the rules, strategy and skills for the major team sports as well as some "life" sports. Each class will begin with a warm up run followed by stretching exercises. Running is considered a part of the fitness program and laps will be run during most classes. Physical Fitness Testing will be done during the year.

Please report medical problems to me as soon as possible. Students who are unable to participate in PE due to illness or injury MUST have a note to be excused. These students are also excused from play at recess. A doctor's note is required if a student is absent three or more days.
